Brainiac. A name now synonymous with destruction, chaos, war, death, and the end of the world as we knew it.
In the beginning, Vril Dox was a scientist obsessed with the practice of acquiring knowledge. After extensive amounts of research and genetic and cybernetic experimentation, he acquired a spaceship and went on a journey through space, acquiring knowledge and using his robotic drones to capture living organisms of various alien species. Along the way, he came to Krypton and kidnapped the entire city of Kandor, miniaturizing it in his spaceship. This was his first encounter with the Kryptonians, their military then led by the tyrannical General Zod. His conflict with General Zod shook the planet to its foundations, and though Brainiac was technically defeated, the damage to the planet proved cataclysmic. Most of the Kryptonian Race was destroyed by the after-effects, though few actually realized that it was because of the damage cause by Brainiac that the planet was destroyed.
After recovering from his war against the Kryptonians, Brainiac slowly but surely conquered more and more planets, collecting and digitizing entire races, gathering all information in the galaxy. As time went on, Brainiac became more and more of a machine, all but shedding his physical form and transcending into an omniescent consciousness, though he was still linked to some degree to his cybernetically preserved physical body. He sent probes and drones throughout the galaxy, leading him to more and more planets that would then be attacked and devoured by the Brainiac construct. As time went by, he proved an even larger galactic threat than Darkseid in terms of the sheer number of worlds that he annihilated.
One of his probes eventually landed on Earth, where it encountered Superman – or as Brainiac knew him, Kal-El. Brainiac aggressively engaged the Kryptonian, seeing him as a potential threat to his goals. Before long, Brainiac became one of Earth’s Mightiest Hero’s preeminent enemies, his attempts to conquer Earth and digitize its inhabitants becoming bolder and more dangerous as time went by.
This obsession with breaking the Man of Steel and destroying the world he held so dear culminated in Brainiac’s personal ship – that held his physical form – arriving in orbit of the planet personally. His invasion fleet was discovered by Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of the sector, who was on his way home to Earth from the planet Oa. Brainiac ambushed him and quickly overpowered him, corrupting and stealing his Green Power Ring in the process. With this newfound powersource fueled by Brainiac’s incredible force of will, Brainiac launched a devestating attack on Earth, at which point he finally destroyed his long standing nemesis.
The stories of the Brainiac War are recorded in many places, and its tales are well enough known that they need not be retold here, nor his defeat at the hands of Batman and Lex Luthor. Suffice to say that his actions secured Brainiac a place in the Earth’s memory. Millions of people were killed in the Brainiac War, and his name still has the power to send chills of terror through any resident of Earth, and remains the world’s most hated and feared villain of all time.
